confluence of sinuses

@ P edge of tentorium cerebelli
junction of S sagittal, straight, occipital, and transverse sinuses

S sagittal sinus

runs in attaches S border of falx cerebri
ends in confluence of sinuses

I sagittal sinus

runs in free I edge of falx cerebri
ends in confluence of sinuses

straight sinus

runs in space formed by union of falx cerebri and tentorium cerebelli
receives I sagittal sinus and great cerebral v.
drains into confluence of sinuses

transverse sinuses

run along attached P-L margins of tentorium cerebelli
P - join @ confluence of sinuses
A - drain into sigmoid sinuses
form grooves in O and P bones along the way

sigmoid sinuses

run in deep grooves of C and T bones
rain into IJVs @ jugular foramen

occipital sinus

runs in free edge of falx cerebelli
ends in confluence of sinuses

cavernous sinuses

on either side of sella turcica
unique:
- contain plexus of thin-walled vv.
- internal carotid a. - surrounded by sympathetic internal carotid n. plexus
- oculomotor n. (CN III)
- trochlear n. (CN IV)
- ophthalmic and maxillary divisions (CN V1 and V2) of trigeminal n. (CN V)
- abducens n. (CN VI)
receive:
- S and I ophthalmic vv.
- sphenoparietal sinuses
- superficial middle cerebral vv.
- central vv. of retina
drain into S and I petrosal sinuses P
drain into pterygoid venous plexus I
connected by intercavernous sinuses

S petrosal sinuses

drain cavernous sinuses
w/in attached margins of tentorium cerebelli along top of petrous part of T bones
empty into sigmoidal sinuses

I petrosal sinuses

drain cavernous sinuses
pass through groove between petrous part of T bones and basilar part of O bone
empty into sigmoid sinuses @ origin of IJVs
communicate w/ vertebral venous plexus via basilar plexus

What are they?

valveless venous space that form as a result of separation of periosteal and meningeal layers of the dura
they drain most of the large vv. of the brain, skull, orbit, and inner ear
from there they drain into IJVs
