Wars that reclaimed Holy Land from Muslims 1096-1291
Specifically, Jerusalem
Main Goal: make Jerusalem a Christian City

Pope called all warriors to unite and drive Muslims out

Effects of Crusades

1. Trade increased
2. Kings became more powerful because knights lost lives and lands
3. Dislike for non-Christians became popular (negative effect on Europe's Jewish popuation)

came from fleas, rats and mice on board ships in Black Sea

60% mortality
Giant bruises over entire body
Died in 7-14 days

90% mortality rate
Spread fast by sneezing, coughing, etc.
Died in 3-5 days

1/3 or 25 million dead in Europe
