1

Describe the structure of the uterine tubes

Fine connecting ovaries to uterine horns

2

Name five functions of the uterine tubes

Transport of sperm
Binding sites for sperm to allow capacitation
Transport of ova
Transfer and development of the embryo
Nutrition of sperm, ova and embryo

3

Describe the structure of the uterus

Consists of two horns and a body. Within the walls of the uterus are two tissues: endometrium and myometrium

4

Describe the structure and function of the myometrium

Consists of strong bands of muscle lying under the endometrium. These muscles provide contractions to move sperm up to the uterine tubes at mating and expel the foetus at birth.

5

Describe the structure and function of the endometrium

The internal lining of the uterine lumen and is richly supplied with blood vessels. It secretes nutrients to nourish sperm and embryo.

6

Describe the function of the cervix

Protection of the uterus from infection by bacteria
Prevents entry of fluids containing harmful microorganisms
Secretion of of mucus - lubricates the vagina

7

Describe the function of vagina

Semen is deposited at ejaculation
Bladder of the female passes urine through the urethra

8

Describe the two main function of the ovary

Produce gametes in cyclical patterns
Produce the gametes (ova) and sex hormones
