Where is latex from?

Sap from a rubber tree

-cutaneous absorption (absorbed through skin)
-inhalant exposure

Type IV (4) Latex Sensitivity

DELAYED ONSET
-contact dermatitis (rash)
-edema (swelling)
-pruritus (severe itching)
-erythema (painful bumps)
-vesicles (fluid of air filled cavity)
-drying papules (small raised pimple/swelling)
-crusting thickening skin

Type I (1) Latex Sensitivity

IMMEDIATE ONSET
-anaphylactic reaction
-generalized symptoms
-urticaria (skin rash triggered by food/ingesting)
-wheezing
-dyspnea (difficult or labored breathing)
-bronchospasm
-tachycardia
-angioedema/hypotension

High Risk Individuals

-healthcare workers
-patients with spina bifida
-genitourinary tract abnormalities
-patients who undergo multiple procedures
-people who work in the rubber industry
-hereditary tendency
