Systematic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (SIRS) is the body's response to

a variety of severe clinical insults

Systemic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (SIRS) can be characterised by the presence of two or more of the following features:

- Temperature 38> or 90/min
- RR20/min or PACO2 <4.3kPa
- WCC 12 x 10/1

Sepsis is defined as

SIRS in response to infection

Severe sepsis is associated with

- Organ dysfunction
- Hypotension

MODS is

Multiple Organ Dysfunction Syndrome; a state where dysfunction is seen in several organs

What is initial management of a critically ill patient?

- Immediate assessment of the airway, breathing and circulation
- A brief history
- A limited examination of the relevant systems of the body

- A secondary assessment after stabilisation of the patient, including more thorough history, detailed examination by system and appropriate investigations

Respiratory failure is suggested by signs of respiratory distress including

Dyspnoea, increased RR, use of accessory muscles, cyanosis, confusion, tachycardia, sweating
