Rapidly progressive dyspnoea, tachypnea, and hypoxaemia

Diagnosis criteria for acute respiratory distress syndrome includes

- acute onset
- profound hypoxaemia
- PF (pao2/fio2) ratio of <200
- bilateral pulmonary infiltrates
- absence of left atrial hypertension
- pulmonary artery wedge pressure of 18 mm Hg or less

Risk factors include those causing direct lung injury such as

- pneumonia
- inhalation injury
- pulmonary contusion
