Q

Syncope

What is it?
Order of treatment for it?

A

PERIPHERAL DIALATION leading to LOW CARDIAC OUTPUT resulting in DECREASED CEREBRAL BLOOD FLOW resulting in transient LOSS OF CONCIOUSNESS.

Most Common Emergency

  1. POSITION SUPINE with FEET ELEVATED
  2. O2
  3. AMMONIA (if unconscious)
    4.

Q

What is a CARPOPEDAL SPASM?

⬇️

What does it look like?

What do you never give?

A

HYPOCALCIMIA in Blood from reduction in Carbon Dioxide tension in Blood. ⬇️

Hyperventilation.

-resulting in involuntary contraction of the feet or (more commonly) the hands

NEVER give O2 to someone Hyperventilating.

Q

LATEX allergic patients can experience what type of HYPERSENSITIVITY reaction if exposed to latex from dental products?

A

TYPE IV

  • not life threatening
  • delayed type hypersensitivity as the reaction takes several days to develop.
  • Unlike the other types, it is not antibody-mediated but rather is a type of cell-mediated response.
  • This response involves the interaction of T-cells, monocytes, and macrophages.

Q

Anaphylaxis at a cellular level involves primarily what cells?

A

MAST CELLS

BASOPHILS

Anaphylaxis is a severe allergic reaction of rapid onset affecting many body systems.
It is due to the release of inflammatory mediators and cytokines from mast cells and basophils, typically due to an immunologic reaction but sometimes non-immunologic mechanism.

Q

Vasovagal Syncope

A

You faint because your body overreacts to certain TRIGGERS, such as the sight of blood or extreme emotional distress.
It may also be called neurocardiogenic syncope.

The vasovagal syncope trigger causes your HEART RATE and BLOOD PRESSURE to drop suddenly.⬇️
