A

A.K.A.

  • congenital granular cell tumor
  • Neumann’s Tumor

proliferation of cells most frequently occurring on the alveolar ridge of the MAXILLA at BIRTH. Less frequently the mass may arise from the mandibular alveolus.

This lesion is more commonly found in FEMALE babies.

Multiple lesions occur in 10% of affected neonates.

The tumor is typically PEDUNCULATED and varies in maximum size from 0.5 cm to 9 cm. The lesion is typically PAINLESS and does NOT INCREASE 🚫 in SIZE after discovery.

Treatment is surgical EXCISION.
RECURRENCE is extremely RARE even after incomplete excision.

🤰

A

A.K.A.
-Pregnancy Tumor 🤰

a VASCULAR tumor (proliferation of CAPILLARIES) that occurs on both mucosa and skin, and appears as an overgrowth of tissue due to IRRITATION, physical TRAUMA (REACTIVE), or HORMONAL factors.

more common in FEMALES than males.

color ranging from RED/PINK to PURPLE, GROW RAPIDLY, and can be smooth or mushroom-shaped.

🔴

appear on the gingiva in 75% of cases, more often in the MAXILLARY than mandibular jaw. ANTERIOR areas are more often affected than posterior areas.

can be PAINFUL, especially if located in an area of the body where it is constantly disturbed.

SIZE commonly RANGES from a few millimeters to centimeters, though smaller or larger lesions may occur.

It is often found to involve the gums, the skin and nasal septum, and has also been found far from the head such as in the thigh.

PERIPHERAL OSSIFYING FIBROMA

A

INCISOR - CANINES

a GINGIVAL NODULE which is composed of a cellular FIBROBLASTIC CONNECTIVE TISSUE stroma which is associated with the formation of randomly dispersed foci of MINERALIZED products, which consists of bone, cementum-like tissue, or a dystrophic calcification.

The color of peripheral ossifying fibromas ranges from RED to PINK, and is frequently ULCERATED.

It can be SESSILE or PEDUNCULATED with the size usually being less than 2 cm. Weeks or months may pass by before it is seen and diagnosed.

66% of the disease occurring in FEMALES. The prevalence of peripheral ossifying fibromas is highest around 10 – 19 years of age.

more often on the MAXILLA rather than the mandible, and is frequently found in the area around INCISORS and CANINES.

Treatment usually involves SURGICAL REMOVAL of the lesion down to the bone.
RECURRENCE is around 16%, with some studies reporting up to 45%.

Q

Soft Tissue differences in Pediatrics vs Adults

CCCST

A

PEDIATRIC GINGIVA soft tissue findings

COLOR:
-More RED due to THINNER EPITHELIUM, less keratination, and greater vascularity.

CONTOUR:
-ROLLED AND ROUNDED MARGINS due to edema that accompanies eruption and prominent cervical ridges

CONSISTENCY:
-FLABBY due to less dense connective tissueand lack of organized collagen

TEXTURE:
-LACK of STIPPLING due to shorter and flatter papilla

SULCUS:
-DEEPER because soft tissue more easily splits up from tooth.

Q

TONSIL SIZE growth patterns

A

Absent at birth

Rarely visible radiographically prior to 6 months of life

Proliferate rapidly during infancy

Reach MAXIMAL size by 2-10 years of age

Progressively ⬇️ in size during 2nd decade of life

The lymphoid type has a unique growth pattern. Organs belonging to the lymphoid type, such as the adenoids (Ad) and tonsils (Tn), attain approximately 200% growth by late childhood and then involute during adulthood.

Q

Ankyloglossia

Prevelance?
Influence on Breast Feeding?

A

BOYS - ARTICULATION - 5%

Tongue-tie typically affects BOYS more often than girls.

Tongue-tie does not cause speech delay, but can affect a child’s speech ARTICULATION —the ability to form sounds and pronounce words.

Prevelance estimated at 5%

50% of those with ankyloglossia who are breastfed have no trouble feeding
