Fever
Sore throat
Feeling of being unwell (malaise)
Irritability in infants and toddlers
Loss of appetite

The most common complication of hand-foot-and-mouth disease is DEHYDRATION (sore throat)

Painful, RED, BLISTER-like lesions on the TONGUE, GUMS, and inside of the CHEEKS

A red rash, without itching but sometimes with blistering, on the PALMS, SOLES and sometimes the buttocks

COXSACKIEVIRUS A16. The coxsackievirus belongs to a group of viruses called nonpolio ENTEROVIRUS.

A rare and sometimes serious form of the coxsackievirus can involve the brain and cause other complications:

VIRAL MENINGITIS . This is a rare infection and inflammation of the membranes (meninges) and cerebrospinal fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord.

ENCEPHALITIS. This severe and potentially life-threatening disease involves brain inflammation caused by a virus. Encephalitis is rare.

SWELLING (inflammation) in the walls of medium-sized ARTERIES throughout the body.

It primarily affects children.

Redness in both eyes
A VERY RED SWOLLEN TONGUE

Redness of the palms or soles
SKIN PEELING
A rash
Swollen lymph nodes

The inflammation tends to affect the CORONARY arteries, β™₯️ which supply blood to the heart muscle.
(a leading cause of acquired heart disease in children)

A.K.A. MUCOCUTANEOUS LYMPH NODE SYNDROME because it also affects glands that swell during an infection (lymph nodes), skin, and the mucous membranes inside the mouth, nose and throat.

Risk factors: (3) 🏍🏍🏍

Age: Children UNDER 5 years old are most at risk of Kawasaki disease.
Sex: BOYS are slightly more likely than girls are to develop Kawasaki disease.
Ethnicity. Children of Asian or Pacific ISLAND DECENT, such as Japanese or Korean, have higher rates of Kawasaki disease.
