opium

A

a conflict between Britain and China, lasting from 1839-1842, over Britain’s opium trade in China. Britain smuggled Opium into China and 12 million Chinese people became addicted to it. China was defeated due to it’s outdated ships against Britain’s steam-powered boats.

Taiping Rebellion

A

a mid-19th century rebellion against the Qing dynasty in China, led by Hong Xiuquan. Hong began recruiting followers to help him build a “Heavenly Kingdom of Great Peace”. The combination of internal fighting and outside assaults resulted in the Taiping government being brought down.

Boxer rebellion

A

A 1900 revolt in china, aimed at ending foreign influence in the country. Poor peasants and workers resented the privileges granted to foreigners. A multinational force marched to Beijing and easily defeated the Boxers.
