Central Powers

A

In World War I, the nations of Germany and Austria-Hungary, along with the other nations that fought on their side. Located in the heart of Europe. Bulgaria and the Ottoman Empire would later join the central powers in hope of regaining lost territories.

Allies

A

In World War I, the nations of Great Britain, France, and Russia, along with any other nations fighting on their side. Japan and Italy later on joined the allies. With the Central powers and allies set, the war begins.

A

In World War I, the region of northern France where the forces of the allies and central powers battled each other. A long and bloody stalemate, or deadblock.

Schlieffen Plan

A

Germany’s military plan at the outbreak of World War I, according to which German troops would rapidly defeat France and then move east to attack Russia. Speed was vital to the Schlieffen plan. Right before the Germans were about to defeat France, the Allies came together and pulled out a victory.

Trench Warfare

A

a form of warfare in which opposing armies fight each other from trenches dug in the battlefield. Life in the trenches was pure misery. Armies traded huge losses of life for pitifully small amounts of land gains.

Eastern Front

A

in World War I, the region along the German-Russian border where Russians and Serbs battled Germans, Austrians, and Turks. Site of the Battle near Tannenburg where the Germans defeated the Russians. Russia’s war efforts begin to collapse.
