Pharmacology - Chapter 44 - Antiinflammatory & Antigout Drugs Flashcards
What pregnancy category do NSAIDs fall under?
C- for first 2 trimesters,
D-for last trimester
What is the mechanism of action for NSAIDs?
NSAIDs relieve pain, headache, and inflammation by blocking the chemical activity of the enzyme called cyclooxygenase (COX)
What category of NSAIDs are aspirin in?
Salicylates
Which drugs fall in the acetic acid derivatives category of anti-inflammatories?
Indocin (indomethacin)-treats rheumatoid arthritis Toradol (kotorolac)-analgesic Voltaren (diclofenac sodium), Clinoril (sulindac), Tolectin (tolmetin), Lodine (etodolac)
Which drugs fall in the propionic acid derivatives category of anti-inflammatories?
Motrin, Advil (Ibuprofen), Nalfon (fenoprofen), Ansaid (flurbinprofen), Orudis KT (ketoprofen), Naprosyn, Aleve (naproxen), Daypro (oxaprozin)

Which drugs fall under COX – 2 inhibitors?
Celebrex (celecoxib)
Which drugs are in the Enolic Acid Derivatives category?
Feldene (Peroxicam),
Mobic (Meloxicam),
Relafen (namumetone)
What are the antigout drugs?
- Zyloprim (Alipurinol)-reduces production of uric acid
- Colchicine-reduces inflammatory response to a deposit of urate crystals in joint tissue
- Benemid (probenecid), Anturane (sulfinpyrazone)-increases excretion of uric acid in urine
Salicylates toxicity
Adults: tinnitus and hearing loss
Children: hyperventilation and CNS effects
Metabolic acidosis and respiratory alkalosis may be present
NSAID interactions may occur with which drugs?
Anticoagulants, aspirin, corticosteroids, protein-bound drugs, diuretics and ACE inhibitors
Which herbal products are used to treat the pain of osteoarthritis?
Glucosamine and chondroitin
Adverse affects of glucosamine and chondroitin?
GI discomfort,
Drowsiness, headache, skin reactions,
Drug interactions with glucosamine and chondroitin
Enhance the affects of warfarin,
May increase insulin resistance
