Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM)

Broad domain of resources that encompasses health systems, modalities, and practices and their accompanying theories and beliefs, other than those intrinsic to the dominant health system of a particular society or culture in a given historical period; includes hypnosis, acupuncture, and reflexology



has been found to be effective in treating a variety of conditions including acute stress disorder and other anxiety disorders, obesity, insomnia, and chronic pain; involves experiencing alterations of memory, perception, and mood in response to suggestions; essential feature: subjective experiential change



method of restoring health through stimulating specific anatomical points on the body; benefits maybe due to release of endorphins and other pain-suppressing substances or to an alteration in blood flow; useful for reducing certain types of pain and managing chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting



based on the assumptions that there are reflex areas in the feet and hands that correspond to all of teh glands, organs, and parts of the body and that applying pressure to these areas re-establishes the body's balance and promotes the healing process; sometimes used as treatment for stress and anxiety, pain, premenstrual syndrome
