Joseph McCoy and Abilene

Joseph McCoy from Chicago used a part of the railroad that reached Abilene in Kansas.

He realised cattle could be collected from there on cattle trucks and brought by railroad.

Why was Joseph McCoy important for the cattle industry?

McCoy bought land cheaply in Abilene to keep any cattle from coming from the south.

He built a hotel for the cowboys bringing cattle north.

He spent $5000 advertising the Chisholm trail to promote it for cowboys to use.

He marked out the Chisholm trail so that it was clear yo the cowboys with the cattle.

He created the huge growth of Abilene which became the first cow-town.

He was the first to make huge sums of money with the cattle industry which inspired other cattle barons to travel to Abilene and do the same.
