CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM Flashcards

1
Q

What is Arteriosclerosis?

A

Art =hard
Hardening of arteries,
Loss of elasticity
Leads to high blood pressure

What is Atherosclerosis

A

(F)ATtherosclerosis
Ath=narrow

Q

What is coronary heart disease?

A

CHD
Arteries affected by arteriosclerosis and atherosclerosis. Demand for oxygen greater than can be supplied = myocardial ishaemia&raquo_space;pain (angina)

Q

Blood pressure Short term adaptation to exercise

A

Systolic increases with intensity (heavy resistance training not recommended for those with high blood pressure)
Diastolic stays the same

Q

Blood pressure long term adaptation to exercuse

A

Blood pressure can be reduced up to 10mmHg with endurance-type cardio
Longer diastole phase = improves coronoary blood flow

Q

What are the other short term adaptations during exercise

A

Heart rate increases
Stroke volume increases
Blood flow diverted away from digestion by vasoconstriction and towards muscles by vasodilation
Blood flow increases from 250 cm2 to 1000cm2

Q

What are the long term adaptations to exercise

A
Heart rate decreases (normal heart rate = 70-80, active 50-60)
Cardiac output increases
Increased blood volume
Increased red blood cells
Better circulation
Hypertrophy of myocardium esp left ventricle
Recovery times improve
Stroke volume increases

15
Q

What is tidal volume?

A

The air moved in and out of the lungs in one breath

It increases with long term excercise

16
Q

What is residual volume

A

The amount of air left in lungs after exhalation

17
Q

What is vital capacity?

A

The maximum amount of air that can be forcefully inhaled and exhaled in one breath (increases with exercise)

18
Q

Look at HDL & LDL

A

Lipoproteins transport fat in blood.
High density lipoproteins are good, (high, angelic)
Low density lipoproteins are bad (low down and dirty)

19
Q

What are the Systotolic and diastolic phases

A

Diastolic where heart relaxes and blood is allowed in

Systolic is contraction where blood is pumped out of the heart

20
Q

Which phase has the greatest flow of blood through the coronary arteries

A

Coronary arteries are on the outside of the heart

So more blood is able to flow through them during diastole relaxation phase

21
Q

What is heart rate

A

Number of times heart beats per min
healthy = 60-80
Trained = 50-60

22
Q

What is stroke volume

A

Volume of blood pumped in 1 min
