What is a DVT?

A
  • it is the formation of a blood clot or thrombus in a deep vein, partially or completely occluding the flow of blood
  • more at risk in pregnancy due to gravid uterus on the inferior vena cava and pelvic veins, an increase in coagulation factors and a reduction in natural inhibitors to anticoagulation and decreased venous tone

What are the signs and symptoms of a DVT?

A
  • pain in area of clot
  • unilateral and occasionally bilateral swelling
  • redness or discolouration
  • difficulty weight bearing on the affected leg
  • low grade pyrexia
  • lower abdominal pain if the pelvic veins are affected
