Flashcards in Ridge push Deck (3)
What happens during ridge push?
Molten magma rises at mid oceanic ridge.
As asthenosphere and lithosphere are heated they rise/ expand.
Elevation produces a slope away from ridge.
Newly formed rock is less dense more buoyant.
However it ages and cools becoming more Dense and gravity causes this older lithosphere to slide away from ridge down sloping asthenosphere.
What have scientist found out using computer models?
That the cool subsiding rock experts a force on spreading plates helping to drive movements.
