  • Used as an Antidote for Acetaminophen Overdose

  • Antitussive (antagonizes NMDA glutamate receptors)
  • Syntetic codeine analog
  • Has mild opioid effect when used in excess
  • Naloxone can be given for overdose
  • Mild abuse potential

Dextromethorphan

  • Sympathomimetic α-agonistic nonprescription nasal decongestants
  • Cx: Reduce Hyperemia, Edema, and Nasal congestion; Open obstructed Eustachian tubes.  Pseudophedrine also illicityly used to make methamphetamine
  • Toxicity: HTN, CNS stimulation/anxiety (Pseudoephedrine)
