Invasive species

Species that spread rapidly and become the dominant species in the community, causing interference with natural biodiversity

1

Community

A group of populations of different organisms that live in the same place at the same time

2

Predation

The process in which one species, the predator, feeds on the prey

3

Competition

Two species compete for the same limited resource

4

Parasitism

The relationship in which one organism depends on another for nourishment or for some other benefit will simultaneously doing the most talk

5

Mutualism

A relationship in which two or more different species benefit from interaction with one another

6

Niche

The functional role a species play in the community to enhance their survival

7

Fundamental Niche

The full amount of resources available to a species in absence of competition

8

Realized niche

Because competitors in the community restrict what resources can be used, species are limited to a realized Niche

9

Food chains and webs

A conceptual record of feeding relationships and energy flow

10

Primary consumers

Animals that eat plants, also called herbivores

11

Secondary consumers

Animals that eat herbivores

12

Detritivores and decomposers

Eat nonliving organic matter; they recycle nutrients

13

Foodchain

Simplified linear diagram of who eats whom

14

Food web

A complex network of who eats whom

15

Keystone species

A species that has far-reaching impacts to the rest of the ecosystem

16

Succession

The regular, predictable, and quantifiable sequence of changes that a community undergoes overtime

17

Primary succession

Follows a disturbance so severe that no vegetation or soil life remains in the community that occupied that site

18

Pioneer species

The first species to grow and emerge to begin the process of recolonization

19

Secondary succession

Occurs when a specific event alters a community

20

Climax community

Remains in place, with little modification, until some disturbance restarts succession

21

Biome

A major regional complex of similar communities of vegetation

22

The main factors determining what the vegetation will be like and will in turn determines what animals will inhabit a biome

Temperature and precipitation

23

What biome do we live in

Temperate deciduous forests

24

Deciduous trees

Lose their leaves each fall and remain dormant during winter

25

Micro biomes

Created by changes in altitude
