Q

Expectorants

Prototype drug: guaifenesin ( mucinex)

A

Promotes increased cough production thru increasing mucous secretions. This allows person to decrease chest congestion by coughing out secretions.

Although available as a expectorant alone it can be combined with antitussives either opioid or NONOPIOIDS , or as a decongestant for treating symptoms of colds, allergic or nonallergic rhinitis, or for cough caused by lower respiratory disorders.

Q

Nursing administration of acetylcysteine ( mucolytics)

A

Advise clients that acetylcysteine has a rotten egg smell

Is administered by inhalation to liquefy nasal and bronchial secretions and facilitate coughing
Is administered PO or IV for acetaminophen overdose
Be prepared to suction clients if aspiration occurs with PO administration

17
Q

Decongestants

A
Prototype drug: phenylephrine ( neo- synephrine)
Other drugs:
ephedrine,
naphazoline ( privine)
Pseudoephedrine ( sudafed)
18
Q

What are decongestants used for

A

Can be used to treat allergic reactions or non allergic rhinitis by relieving nasal stiffness
Acts as a decongestant in clients who have sinusitis and the common cold.

19
Q

Antihistamines are often prescribed for what

A

Allergic rhinitis, may also be used to treat nausea, motion sickness, allergic reactions, and insomnia
