Addition reactions Flashcards

Q

Hyperconjuation?

A

Interaction of a pair of electrons filled C-H sigma orbital with the empty pi* orbital of the C=C bond. This leads to two electrons in the sigma bond being spread over the molecule and the delocalisation of these electrons stabilise the C=C bond, as the number of alkyl groups on a C=C bond increases so does the number of C-H bonds that can interact with and thereby stabilise the C=C bond

Q

Alkyl groups on rate?

A

More alkyl groups attached the faster the electrophilic addition reaction, electron donating groups makes the double or triple bond more nucleophiles and more reactive to electrophiles

Q

Markovnikov rule?

A

On addition of HX to an alkene H attaches to the carbon with fewest alkyl groups and X attacked to the carbon with the most alkyl groups
