shock-Pathophysiology

A

Begins with failure of at least one of the four essential circulatory components: blood volume, myocardial contractility, blood flow, or vascular resistance
Shock is classified according to the system affected
Not a single clinical entity but a life-threatening response
Frequently results in systemic inflammatory response system (SIRS) and multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS)

Stages of Shock

A

Stage 1-hypoperfusion that is caused by inadequate delivery of oxygen, inadequate extraction of oxygen, or both
Stage 2-neural, endocrine, and chemical compensatory mechanisms are initiated
Stage 3-if the cause is not corrected or the compensatory mechanisms continue without reversing the shock, profound hypoperfusion results
Stage 4-Prolonged inadequate tissue perfusion that is unresponsive to therapy ultimately contributes to MODS and death
