Q

Some people say that conscience is a ‘small inner voice’ or a ‘feeling of guilt’, but they’re only aspects. In fact, what is conscience?

A

In fact, our conscience is not separate from us at all. It is at the very core of our being, and essential part of who we are. It is that part of us that is directed towards goodness and truth

What is a religious view of conscience?

A

A person of faith with a conscience is a gift from God. It is God’s word printed in our heart, urging us to do good and avoid evil

Q

Describe the development of a person’s conscience from childhood

A

The process begins in childhood when the parents teach the child about moral behaviour. It continues as they grow older and parents, teachers, ministers et cetera give advice on moral issues. Gradually, the young person begins to have a deeper understanding not only of what is right and wrong, but why something is right or wrong
