9
Q

What is a transform fault?

A

They are faults which occur at right angles to the plate boundary. The parts of the spreading plates on either side of these faults may move at different speeds, leading to friction and ultimately to earthquakes. These tend to be shallow focus earthquakes.

Q

What is the widely accepted cause of the Great African Rift Valley?

A

It is due to plumes of magma rising from the asthenosphere. This relatively hot magma causes the plates above it to bulge and create horsts such as the Ethiopian highlands.

16
Q

What is the deepest ocean trench in the world and how deep is it?

A

It is the Mariana Trench at a depth of 10,994m

17
Q

How many main tectonic plates are there?

A

7

18
Q

What is a shift in polarity of the earth?

A

They are shifts in the earth’s magnetic fields and occur every
200,000 to 300,000 years
