Thermoregulation Flashcards
What is normal temperature?
Between 35.5 and 37.5
What is temperature regulated by?
The hypothalamus
Heat cannot be destroyed, it gets transferred via 4 possible processes which are..
- Conduction
- Convection
- Radiation
- Evaporation
What should the human core temperature be?
37 degrees
What does metabolism do?
Utilises chemical energy
What happens at less than 35.5 degrees
Metabolism increases
O2 consumption increases
Thermogenesis increases
What happens at 41+ degrees ?
Brain cells degenerate
Organ failure
Local hemorrhages occur
What is thermogenesis?
Production of body heat from the metabolic rate
What 4 things does effective metabolism require?
- Adequate brown fat
- Sufficient blood glucose
- Large supply of oxygen
- Functioning nervous system
What is hypoxia
A deficiency in oxygen reaching the tissues
What is hypoglycemia?
A deficiency in glucose in blood
What does vasodilation attempt to do?
Regulate the overall temperature
Heat is produced when what 2 hormones are produced?
Adrenaline and noradrenaline
When does brown fat develop from?
26 weeks
How many times faster do babies lose their heat compared to adults?
4 times faster
