According to Marley in Act 1, Scene 3, why does he walk the earth as a spirit?

A

It is required of every man that the spirit within him should walk abroad among his fellow-men and travel far and wide; if that spirit goes not forth in life, it is condemned to do so after death. -

Because of the way Marley spent his life - he never roved beyond the narrow limits of our money-changing hole
