A

The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 was put into place to protect patient privacy regarding medical records and health information provided to health plans, doctors, hospitals, and other health care providers. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) developed this standard to provide patients with access to their medical records and help them gain more control over how their personal health information is used.
