Cultural Competence: Definition
A
The capacity to function effectively as an organization (hospital) within the context of cultural beliefs, behaviors and needs presented by our patients.

Why is cultural competence important?
A
- Cultural competency is one of the main ingredients in closing the disparity gap in healthcare.
- Healthcare services that are respectful of, and responsive to health beliefs, practices, and cultural and linguistic needs of diverse patients bring about positive health outcomes.

How is cultural competence achieved?
A
- To be culturally competent, healthcare providers are not expected to have full knowledge of every cultural practice and belief. Rather they must be sensitive to the preferences and values of others, and should not assume that one person’s preferences and values apply to everyone in that group.
- Healthcare providers must recognize their own cultural values and potential biases wherever possible. Self-awareness is part of the equation for success.
