What is Section 7 of the Victims’ Rights Act 2002?
Victims must be treated with courtesy and compassion.
What is the definition of a victim?
- A person against whom an offence is committed by another person.
- By an offence committed by another person, suffers physical injury, or loss of, or damage to property.
- A parent or legal guardian of a child or young person (unless they are the charged/convicted).
- If the person dies or is incapable, there immediate family (unless they are the charged/convicted).

Victims should have access to services eg counselling.

What are the emotional reactions to victimisation (the impact stage)?
- Numbness: Being unable to feel anything.
- Disorientation: Being confused about where they are, what time it is and so on.
- Immobolisation: Being unable to actively deal with the situation.
- Feeling of unreality: “This can’t be happening to me.”
- Childlike dependence: Being unable to make the simplest decisions.
What is post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)?
It is a serious psychological disorder in which the victim re-experiences the events surrounding the event.
