Q

What happened in 1967?

A

Some progressive Churches of Christ – wanting to imitate the “success” of Campus Crusade and save their children who chose not to go to Christian Colleges – form an “experimental” effort for secular campuses called: Campus Advance. This was founded at the 14th Street Church of Christ in Gainesville, Florida. In 1973, the congregation moved to a new building and was renamed the Crossroads Church of Christ. In 1967, Chuck Lucas was chosen to initiate Campus Advance. Concepts such as small group evangelism (“Soul Talks”), “counting the cost” at baptism (total commitment), and a shepherding “buddy system” called “prayer partners” were innovations. The campus ministers and “women’s counselors” raised-up there were sent into existing Mainline Churches of Christ, thus forming the “Crossroads Movement” also called the “Total Commitment Movement.”
