About Pathology on Brainscape

What is Pathology?

Somehow, our bodies can handle a small amount of microorganisms in our hands, in the air that we breathe, and from the food that we eat. However, there are a lot of potential human killers in our environment than there are in all of the world’s prisons combined. To determine the causes of deadly diseases that affect individuals of all ages, medical professionals make use of pathology.

Clinical Pathology is a medical specialty that deals with the study of the causes and nature of both acute and chronic diseases, various ailments, some serious genetic problems, and countless other medical conditions.  Pathological tests are performed by examining blood serum, bodily fluids, bone and tissues through blood tests, biopsies and a multitude of other diagnostic exams.

If you prefer to work in a lab looking through microscopes and examining bacterias or other disease-causing microorganisms, rather than communicating with patients all day, pathology may suit your career goals!

Examples of jobs related to Pathology include Clinical Pathologist, Medical Technologist, Medical lab technician, Forensic technician or Mortuary assistant, Cytotechnologist, Researcher, University Professor, and Clinical Research Associate —to name a few.
