About Greek on Brainscape

What is Greek?

The Greek language is a separate branch of the Indo-European family and is spoken in the native country Greece and surrounding areas of the Eastern Mediterranean and Black Sea.

Greek rates low in terms of the number of speakers with just 12 million global speakers yet it remains a popular language to study largely due to its history; Acropolis and ancient Greece gave Western society much of its thought and philosophy in addition to the building blocks of our science and mathematics.

Taking a year to live in Greece during your studies will improve your language skills and give you the opportunity to see the sights of Ancient Greece. Majors may take many career options after graduating including roles in education, translation, tourism, foreign affairs, immigration, customs, aid agencies, and media. Check out this Ancient Greek in 18 minutes video to get up to speed.

Learning Greek

The Greek language uses the Greek alphabet comprising 24 characters which English learners will have to learn from scratch. Whilst only 24 characters it can still seem entirely “foreign” to begin with. The Brainscape system is ideal for language students enabling you to drill down and tackle learning at your own pace.

There are tens of thousands of Greek flashcards on this page guiding you gradually through words and phrases in Greek and their correct usage.
