About German on Brainscape

What is German?

German is a West Germanic language (just like English) and considered to be the European business language backed by Germany’s thriving economy. The official language in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, South Tyrol (Italy), parts of Belgium, and Liechtenstein; it’s notable like English for its broad dialects.

Surprisingly, German is only the twelfth major language spoken in the modern world with around 100 million native speakers. The language has many words derived from other languages including Latin, Greek, French and English.

German graduates may consider a number of roles including: German teacher, interpreter, translator, journalist, international aid worker, detective, diplomatic service officer, and many more.

You can find out more about learning German at The American Institute for German Studies and The American Association of German Teachers.
