Q

Zoonotic Gm- Rods Facts

A
Uncommon in US
Little or no transmission between humans
Fastidious, multiply in phagocytes
highly virulent
Usually treat with aminoglycosides
2
Q

Zoonotic gm-Rods to know (5)

A
Brucella
Patella multocida
Franciscella tularensis
Yersinia pestis
Pseudomonas aeruginosa
3
Q

Brucella

  • habitat
  • disease
  • culture
  • prevention
  • trx
A

Bruce Farms

  • Unpastuerized dairy, Livestock/dog/goat/human, transmitted by contract, inhalation of aerosols, bad milk/meat
  • reticulo endothelial dage, can spread systemically, possible osteomyelitis-primary is undulant fever and chills
  • brucella agar
  • test and immunize cattle/cook food fully/pastueize milk
  • doxy and rifampin
4
Q

Franciscella tularensis

  • habitat
  • disease
  • culture
  • trx
A

Francis the rabbit

  • -wild animals esp rabbit, transmissions with bite (animal or dermacentor tick)
  • ulcer, enter macrophages, caseating necrosis at lymph, regional lymphadenopathy, septicemia
  • immunoflouresce/agglutination
  • streptomycin
5
Q

Pasturella multocida

  • habitat
  • disease
  • culture
  • trx
A

Louis Pasteur’s Lab

  • oral flora of many animals-dog or cat bite
  • cellulitis that can spread to osteomyelitis, possibly lymphadenopathy (if have predisposing liver disease/COPD)-snuffles (deadly) in rabbit
  • culture in blood agar with elevated CO2, catalase positive, oxidase positive, capsule, safety pin staining
  • amoxycilin/penicilin and beta lactase inhibitors to prevent resistance
6
Q

Pseudomonas aeruginosa

  • habitat
  • virulence
  • disease
  • culture
  • trx
  • special
A

The Suitors of Pseudo Mona (probably also in enteric)

  • widespread in soil, water veg, biofilms (hot tub and lungs)
  • extracellular poly sac, pilli, PLS, extracelluar enzymes that degrade ECM, Exotoxin A-Type 3 secretory system
  • hot tubfolliculitis/otitis extern, infect any tissue organ, septicemia, CF problems due to biofilm
  • non fastidious, siderospobes that tinge culture green, grape smell, slightly curved and polar flagella
  • Piperacillin and bacterium, fluroquionilones
  • community is usually contaminated water (need serious autoimmune weakness for bad infection), nosocomial is burn victimsnd intubated patients
7
Q

Yersinia pestis

  • habitat
  • virulence
  • disease
  • culture
  • trx
A

Yershin’s Pets-Rodent capsule

  • pathogen of small rodents in US SW, transmitted through flea bite (clot-regurgitation of previous meal system), can be aerosolized
  • phagocytic paralysis, Fe acquisition, capsule, Yersinia outer protein-cause macrophage and neutrophil destruction-allow quick spread-type 3 secretion
  • bubonic/pneumonic plague, bubos (lymphadenopathy), sepsis, bleeding lesions, endotoxins cause necrosis of tissues, exotoxins too, peripheral gangrine
  • MacConkey and blood agar-looks like safety pin, NAAT, resistant to cold
  • Streptomycin/aminoclycoside and tetracycline, also there is a killed vaccine
