Laws may need to change because of:

- Changing community attitudes and values
- Advances in technology

Changing community attitudes and values:

In order for the law to remain acceptable to individuals in society, it needs to change so it reflects changing community attitudes and values.

Changing community attitudes example:

Abortion was decriminalised in VIC in 2008 through the Abortion Law Reform Act because abortion was seen as acceptable in the community.

Advances in technology:

The law needs to change to meet the new demands made by the introduction of new technologies. Advances in technology often create new situations for individuals to be exploited or harmed.

Advances in technology example:

Computers and the internet have made identity theft an increasing problem, therefore the Crimes Amendment (Identity Crime) Act 2009 has been passed to try and circumvent this problem.
