Define: determinant of health
factors that raise or lower a level of health in a population or individual; they help to explain or predict trends in health and why some groups have better or worse health than others; they can be classified into biological, behavioural, social environment and physical environment.
What is the health status of individuals/populations a product of?
behavioural, biological, social environment and physical environment determinants.
Define: risk factor
factors detrimental to health (smoking, lack of exercise). They push one towards optimal health.
Define: protective factor
factors that promote or enhance health (balanced diet). They push one towards ill health.
