1

What conditions are associated with Coxsackie A?

Hand, foot, and mouth disease
Aseptic meningitis
Herpangina
Acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis
Poliomyelitis-like symptoms

2

What conditions are associated with Coxsackie B?

Myocarditis
Pericarditis
Pleurodynia
Juvenile diabetes

3

What is the pathogenesis of orthomyxoviridae?

Hemagglutinin on viral cell binds to sialic acid on host cell. When virus is being exocytosed, NA cleaves it.

4

What is antigenic drift?

Small, constant point mutations
Gradual change in amino acid composition
Results in minor antigenic change leading to EPIDEMICS
Seen in all 3 types of influenza
Annual vaccine

5

What is antigenic shift?

Substitution of gene segments with segments from another influenza virus from a different host --> reassortment
Only seen in influenza A
PANDEMICS
Less common

6

What are the three strains of influenza?

A: humans, birds, swine, etc
B: only found in humans
C: mainly humans? (rare)
