Why aren’t you given the whole pathogen?

A

Because it could have negative effects, however it gives enough so the body will stop it later

Vaccines

A

Vaccines use dead, live attenuated (weak) or recombinant (many given together in one bacteria)

Adjuvants

A

Used to enhance the potency of the vaccine p. Substances such as egg proteins, formaldehyde, aluminium and antibiotics are used

Herd immunity

A

Where enough of a population are vaccinated to stop the pathogen from spreading anymore

How do vaccinations make a person immune to a disease

A

Give you a dead/weaker part of the pathogen
Your body produces the antibodies
When you get it your body knows most of the antibodies required to stop the real disease
Creates antibodies much quicker

How does this help for the future?

A

Memory lymphocytes will remember the antibodies required
