considerations

A
  • since there are two tendency tones, we must be careful of use
  • to avoid parallel fifths, when V7 - I are both in root position, one of the two chords must be incomplete
    • missing a fifth from either chord is an acceptable solution
    • inversions can also solve the problem
  • exceptions:
    • at a cadence, you can transfer the leading tone to a different voice (to soprano)
    • parallel motion between bass and other voices. chordal 7th can be pulled up only because we have parallel 10ths

  • avoid direct octaves
  • direct octaves with soprano moving stepwise is permitted
  • avoid contrary fifths
  • avoid unequal fifths (d5 to P5)
  • P5 to d5 is permitted though
  • you cna have two dominant chords in a row if you use:
    • adding a 7 (a V to V7)
    • transferred resolution
