1
Q

name and describe the two types of chemical analysis

A

qualitative analysis - used to find out if a substance is present in a sample (e.g. the flame test). quantitative analysis - used to find the quantity of a substance in a sample (e.g. titrations)

2
Q

what is the flame test used to test?

A

identify the presence of metals in a substance

3
Q

what is a precipitation reaction?

A

reaction in which substances and solution are mixed and an insoluble product is made

4
Q

explain quantitative precipitation

A

since a precipitate is an insoluble solid, it can be separated from a solution by filtration. the separated solid can then be dried out in an oven and then weighed. using the mass of precipitate produced we can also calculate the mass of the reactants
