1
Q

What do multicellular organisms need?

A

A transport system

2
Q

What do plant cells need

A

Things like water, minerals and sugars and they also need to get rid of waste substances

3
Q

What happens in unicellular organisms?

A

Substances can diffuse directly into and out of the cell across the cell membrane - the diffusion rate is quick because of the short distances the substances have to travel

4
Q

What happens in multicellular organisms? (like animals and plants)

A

Direct diffusion from the outer surface would be to slow - as the substances have to travel large distances to reach every single cell

5
Q

How many transport systems do plants have?

A

Two systems

6
Q

What are the two transport system called?

A

Xylem and phloem

7
Q

What does the xylem transport?

A

They carry water and mineral salts from the roots up the shoot to the leaves in the transpiration stream

8
Q

What does the phloem transport?

A

It transports sugars like sucrose and amino acids from where they are made in the leaves to other parts of the plant

9
Q

What is the movement of substances around a plant called?

A

Translocation

10
Q

What do root hairs do?

A

Take in water by osmosis

11
Q

What do the cells on plant roots grow into?

A

Lon “hairs” which stick out into the soil

12
Q

Why are the benefits of each branch of a root covered in millions of microscopic hairs?

A

Gives a plant a big sa for absorbing water from the soil

13
Q

How is the water taken in by osmosis?

A

There usually a higher concentration of water in the soil than there is inside the plant, so the water is drawn into the root hair cell by osmosis
