Q

What is negative transfer?

A

Where learning one skill negatively influences the learning of another?

These skills need to have SIMILAR movement patterns that differ slightly in execution.

Eg. A tennis forehand and a squash forehand - Tennis predominantly uses topspin whereas squash requires flatter and maybe backspin shots to get the ball down off the wall quickly.

Cricket (straight bat) and Golf (angled swing plane) could also negatively transfer

1
Q

What is positive transfer?

A

Where the learning of one skill helps another.

Eg. throwing a cricket ball positively transfer to throwing a rounders ball

4
Q

What is bi-lateral transfer ?

A

Where learning skills with one side of the body can influence learning the skill on the other side of the body.

Eg. Ronnie o’Sullivan has transferred his snooker skills from the right side to the left side of his body.

5
Q

Can there be ‘no transfer’

A

Yes - the skills are usually so different that no learning similarities exist.

Eg. Batting technique in cricket and somersault in trampolining

6
Q

What is proactive transfer?

A

Where the understanding of a previous skill positively influences the learning of a new one.

Eg. Being able to produce an effective sprinting technique allows a new skill such as the long jump to be learned more quickly as the sprint run up is the same

7
Q

What is retroactive transfer?

A

Where learning a new skill will help a previously learned skill.

Eg. A football goal keeper learning line out catching in rugby would help with claiming crosses under pressure when she returns to football

Or the rugby player who goes to play rugby league for a while to develop crash tackling technique when they come back to Rugby Union

Or the Basketball player who trains in netball for a while to develop footwork and positioning without the luxury of a dribble. They return to Bball with better movement.
