Transcription & Translation Flashcards
What Is Dna needed for but why can’t it do it
It is needed to make protein in the ribosomes of the cell
Why is mRNA made
To be able to make protein a copy of dna which is smaller is made
What does mRNA stand for
Messenger RNA
What is mRNA and when is it made
It’s like one single strand of dna made during transcription
What is the base u full name and why is it used in transcription
Because there is no T in mRNA so the base Uraci is made to attach to A
Explain the three steps to transcription
1 dna unzips so the two strands are separated and one of the strands acts as a template
2 complimentary bases attach to the strands being copied and forms a strand of mRNA
3 when completed mRNA detaches from DNA and DNA zips up again
What happens after transcription
The mRNA is small enough to move out of the nucleus and then travels to the ribosomes in the cytoplasm where protein is made
What is protein made from
Different amino acids
Why does the order of amino acids matter when making protein
Because each different combination makes a different protein
Name the three main steps of translation
1mRNA attaches to a ribosome and the nucleotide sequence is interpreted and new protein is made
2 the ribosome reads the nucleotides on the mRNA in codons and each codon codes for a specific amino acid
3 the amino acids then join in a chain to make a protein
What is a codon
A group of three of nucleotides on the mRNA
