The process of photosynthesis?

A

In photosynthesis plants take in CO2 + H20, using energy in the sunlight in which the chlorophyll traps in the chloroplasts. Using the energy in this sunlight these molecules are combined to make sugars. the bi-product of photosynthesis is oxygen.

  • The flat thin shape gives it a high surface area which optimizes gas exchange.
  • The internal structure of the leaf includes the spongy mesophyll that contains many air spaces which also increases the opportunity for gas exchange

What is the roll of stomata in leaves?

A

The stomata regulates the level of water and CO2 that can leave or enter the leaf. When the stomata is open ( the Guard Cells are turgid) the amount of water loss is increased and the amount of Carbon Dioxide that enters is increased. The opposite happens when the stomata is closed (Guard Cells become flaccid). This regulates water movement and loss in the plant and also effects the rate of photosynthesis.
