Q

What is the function of the respiratory system?

A

To get air into the body and carbon dioxide out.

2
Q

What are the 3 short term effects of exercise on the respiratory system?

A

Breathing rate increases, increased deoth of breathing and oxygen debt.

3
Q

What are the benefits of having an increased rate and depth of breathing when exercising?

A

It increases the removal of carbon dioxide and increases the amount of oxygen taken into the lungs in every breath.

4
Q

What is the definition of oxygen debt?

A

The amount of oxygen consumed during recovery above that which would have ordinarily been consumed in the same time at rest.

5
Q

What are the long term effects of exercise on the respiratory system?

A

Increased lung capacity, increased vital capacity and increased number of alveoli.

6
Q

What are the benefits of an increased lung capacity, increased vital capacity and increased number of alveoli when exercising?

A

Your respirsatory system is stringer, you can take in more air and therefore more oxygen can go to the working muscles.

7
Q

What is the definition of ‘total lung capacity’?

A

The total volume of air in your lungs after your biggest breath in.

8
Q

What is the definition of ‘tidal volume’?

A

During normal breathing, the total amount breathed in and out in one cycle.

9
Q

What is the definition of ‘vital capacity’?

A

The maximum you can forcibly breathe in and out.

10
Q

What effect does smoking have on the respiratory system?

A

Smoking will cause a reduction in oxygen uptake by red blood cells as they will carry carbon monoxide from the smoke in preference to oxygen.

11
Q

What effect does smoking have on the alveoli?

A

Smoking damages the alveoli making them less elastic. This reduces the effectiveness of gaseous exchange as the gases can’t travel through as efficiently.
