Q

We use a clove hitch and binder knot to hoist many of our tools, with a half hitch at the opposite end. The half hitch is _” below the handle of the axe, when hoisting an axe. The half hitch is _” from the end of the pull down hook. This hook is used for pulling down partitions, fences, etc. Enabling members to work in safe areas away from falling objects.

A

5” for the axe
12” for the pull down hook

Also when hoisting a hook upward the clove hitch & binder is at the end opposite the hook, 6” from the end, and the half hitch is at the hook end.

1
Q

What is the required length for a bowline on a bight, a rolling hitch, and a knots to hoist ladders?

A

They are all 1 1/2 arms lengths. And the knot to hoist ladders has a 1 ft. end (bowline knot). It also states later on that the bowline knot is used for ladders 20’ and over.

2
Q

T or F
The search rope is used to maintain search team integrity. It should be deployed in large areas, complex areas and below grade areas. It should be deployed in the above situations only when there is a moderate to heavy heat and smoke condition?

A

False
It shall be deployed in the above locations even in light to moderate smoke and heat conditions since conditions can deteriorate rapidly.

3
Q
The search rope is made of either 5/16" diameter white nylon or a 7.5 mm kern mantle design. The rope is?
A) 100'
B) 150'
C) 200'
D) 300'
A

C) 200’

4
Q
Nylon search rope shrinks over time, moisture and temperature being the most common. Nylon search ropes may be short by?
A) 8-10'
B)10-12'
C)12-15'
D) 25' or more
A

D) 25’ or more
Note: LSR can shrink 8-10’. And when wet LSR loses 10-15% of its strength. When wet allow it to dry naturally out of sunlight

5
Q
When you reach the last set of 7 knots how far along the rope are you?
A)125'
B)150'
C)175'
D)200'
A

C) 175’
Interval distance knots are 25’ apart. A single knot is tied at 25’. 2 knots tied at 50’ and so on. All knots have a direction knot except the 25’ distance knot.

6
Q

Spacing between distance knots are __” a single direction knot is __” before the distance knots when traveling in the direction of deployment. This directional knot will always be closer to the tie off or exit.

A

6” for distance knots

18” for directional knots

7
Q
When a unit deploys the search rope notify the ic. Secure the end to a substantial non- movable object in a clear safe environment ( floor below, enclosed staircase). The bag can be worn over the shoulder or carried in one hand. Keep it taught and maintain the rope approx. how many feet off the ground?
A) 1'-2'
B)2'-3'
C)3'-4'
D) none of the above
A

A) approx 1’-2’

Note: when changing grade or direction the rope shall be tied off

8
Q

If more than 200’ of rope is needed can you attach the snap hook of a 2nd length of rope?

A

Yes

9
Q

T or F

HT contact shall be maintained by all search team members on the search rope

A

False

Voice contact shall be maintained with all search team members on the search rope

10
Q

T or F

The officers primary responsibility is to conduct the search.

A

False

The officers primary responsibility is to coordinate the search.

11
Q

T or F

In some instances members will be allowed to conduct searches off the rope ( out of contact with the search rope).

A

True
The officer must decide if members will conduct searches off the rope. Factors in this decision include:
- size of the area
- configuration of the area
- experience level of the search team
- heat/ smoke conditions
- the ability to stay within voice contact

12
Q
Under most conditions, the number of members assigned to the search rope team should be limited to?
A) 2
B) 3
C)4
D)5
A

B)3
The officer and 2 members will operate as the 1st search team. Remaining members remain at tie off point.
Note: a unit (other that 1st alarm) receiving orders to search an area requiring a search rope shall maintain unit integrity and will perform this function with all members.

13
Q

If your relieving a unit on the search rope, the relieving company and company being relieved should enter and exit with which hand on the rope?
A) both company’s with right hand on rope
B) both company’s with left hand on rope
C) relieving company with right hand and co being relieved left hand.
D) relieving co with left hand and co being relieved with right hand

A

A) both company’s with right hand on rope. ( if possible)
Note: members relieving a company on a search rope must communicate with each other about the areas searched to eliminate duplication.

14
Q

T or F
When searching off the rope, members should advise the officer of the area searched, a description of the area searched, the results of the search, and if there were any secondary means of egress found on there search.

A) clockwise
B) counter clockwise

A

Clockwise

17
Q

Next during the repacking process secure the clip at the end of the rope ( after the 7 knots) to the D ring in the bottom of the bag. Coil the rope into the case ______.
