Q

Monism vs. Theistic dualism

A

Monism= naturalism, that all we are is our physical being (non-biblical)
Implications: abortion, euthenasia, weird views of sexuality, human worth or dignity non-existent

Theistic Dualism (Biblical)
Deistic Dualism: Biblical understanding. We are both material and immaterial
2
Q

Theistic monism vs. theistic dualism

A

Theistic monism= soul sleep, your spirit stays in your body (non-biblical)
Theistic dualism= you can exist outside of your body (biblical)

Give me a way to prove that from a statement from scripture. Any of the ones we looked at in class are fine.

3
Q

Talk about two extremes of gnostic dualism versus theistic dualism

A

1) Asceticism= don’t enjoy any pleasures at all, punish the body/flesh as much as possible
2) Hedonism= the body/flesh doesn’t matter, God only cares about the Spirit, and you can do anything you want in your body and it doesn’t affect your spirit

4
Q

Two extremes in theistic dualism

A

1) God made our body
Holiness is external/ without–how we live in our flesh. Has to glorify God.
2) God made our soul
Holiness is within; our human spirit/soul. Also has to glorify God.

5
Q

Why can we not call God a woman?

A

I can only say at the end of the day what the Bible says. The Bible is my definition for all of theology.
What do we do with feminine imagery in the Bible?
Ex. Hen gathering chicks
Ex. Handmaid/birth maid
Ex. God giving birth
(Even with these feminine examples/metaphors are ALWAYS accompanied by MASCULINE pronouns)

6
Q

What 3 relationships were affected by the fall?

A

God, others, and ourselves

7
Q

Explain how the “I, thou,” the relational aspect, of our life was messed up by the fall and we become an exalted I or ego.

A

The answer is simple: Selfishness. We no longer think of God or others, we only think of ourselves and we actually fracture ourselves by doing that

8
Q

Give some examples of how egoism or egocentricity is the way that we universally relate to each other in our fallen world today?

A

You can talk about family, dating, practices of businesses
How would these manifest that selfishness, where you can step on others, not think of the good of others, and even in leadership, trying to be arbitrary, trying to get what you want done even in spite of the others you’re trying to lead.
