Most commonly in weaners/growers at age 8-20 weeks. Also occurs in sows

Why does it happen in sows?

A
  • sex hormone levels lead to prolapse after estrus
  • leaning on bars in farrowing crates - pressure creates poor circulation and relaxation of the sphincter
  • too short of tail docking leads to damaged nerve supply to anal ring
