Steinfield and Keidan v Sos for international development (2018) - reviewing the legality of parliamentary legislature

- Used judicial review to put pressure on the government to allow heterosexual couples to have civil partnerships. May announced the governments support for this in Oct 2018.


What is judicial review?

- A review of the actions of ministers and other government officials to ensure that they conform to law
- Ultra vires is when a minister is acting beyond their powers.


What is judicially neutrality?

- Judges should not be politically motivated or biased in anyway possible.


What is judicial independence?

- The actions and decisions of judges should not be influenced by pressure from the executive and parliament
