You are the sergeant in charge of several units conducting fix post traffic control for a major fire. In the course of your duties, you are driving from post to post checking on the welfare of your officers. As you approach one of the post, you see the officer standing outside of patrol vehicle smoking a cigarette. He turns and sees you as you drive up and appeared to be unduly surprised. He hurried to throw the cigarette down and grind it out with his foot as you get out of the car. As you walked up to him you smell the odor of burnt marijuana and noticed that his eyes are bloodshot and glassy. Describe what steps you would take.

You are working the graveyard shift and return to the office after spending a few hours in the field. One of your officers is sitting in the briefing room writing reports and when you ask him where his partner is he says he doesn’t know. As you walk toward the sergeant’s office you notice the partner officer asleep at a desk in the clerical office. You walk over to wake him up and upon coming near him you notice the odor of an alcoholic beverage upon his breath. Explain how you would handle the situation.
